With it you can take an incoming CC22 message and map it to a CC 55 message or whatever you want. Logic has a "MIDI Modifier" as an insert effect for MIDI tracks. So your DAW might already have something like this in it. There may be other hardware converters too but they're still going to have to programmed by software. VMIX LAUNCHCONTROL TEMPLATE SOFTWARENow, there are software converters that can do this. I usually use CC for the easy ones like Pan and Volume, and then SysEx for the ones that don't have a CC#. Bonus is, you can still do your CC messages this way too. You can control everything in a device usually with SysEx messages (you'd be surprised how much you can control!) but they have to be programmed into a device that's capable of storing them and sending them - a Controller Keyboard with some kind of software to edit it and send those messages. So you can't really do Synth-to-Synth control with anything other then CC messages, and the only ones that are going to work and be consistent are the GM ones if they're even supported in the device (telling us what the synth you're trying to control is may help). The problem is, SysEx messages are not consistent among devices - generally only the same model in the same line by the same manufacturer can use the same SysEx messages - you can't send a Roland SysEx message to a Yamaha and have it do anything - but you could send CC7 from Roland and it would change the Yamaha's volume (but Yamaha is not otherwise GM capable because, well, they're Yamaha). Let's say, unlike MIDI Learn it's "MIDI Teach" - in that you have to teach the controller the commands and program them in - since they're not standard CC#s. ![]() VMIX LAUNCHCONTROL TEMPLATE MANUALcan be programmed with specific SysEx messages.įor example, I can set the 8 sliders on my A-800 to be ADSR for Filter and ADSR for VCA - because the synth I'm controlling has SysEx messages that control those things.Īll I have to do is open up the A-800 software and set it to assign a SysEx message to the slider, then go online 22 times and spend days deciphering the manual and getting help online to figure out which message I need to put in, put in the message and bob's your uncle - that Slider now controls VCF Attack. What you really need is a hardware controller keyboard whose knobs, faders, buttons, etc. Some of them will even use CC73 as something other than attack which gets confusing and annoying.īut to get to things like Sustain you usually need to use SysEx messages.īut sending SysEx messages from one keyboard to another is really tricky. But often, as you notice, these are not codified. That has no CC# by GM default, though sometimes the keyboard itself may have things beyond GM set up. Usually you can also turn on/off whether it affects the sending keyboard or not.īut that doesn't help you with say, VCA Sustain level. So if you have two GM capable keyboards, and you change CC71 (Resonance) on one, it should change it on the other as well. ![]() For example, CC72 is VCA Envelope Release. Though I should note, many things weren't necessarily defined by the GM standard. That said, many synths do in fact follow GM standards and many of them have a GM mode they can be put into so they do. Well, MIDI CC assignments SHOULDN'T vary and WOULDN'T IF they would have all followed General MIDI like they should have :-) ![]()
